Updated: Apr 26, 2023

Welcome to week one of 2023. I hope it's been great so far dear reader. As we start this new year off, you may be wanting to begin by planning the goals you want to achieve this year. Whether it's a career goal, fitness goal, or something else you want to achieve, one of the best ways to do that is by checking in with yourself. Doing this will help you to reflect honestly on your past year and get into the right mindset for your goals this year!

The importance of self-reflection

Self-reflection is taking time to pause and think about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It's a powerful tool that can help you better understand yourself and your motivations, improve your problem-solving skills, and develop stronger relationships with others. By taking the time to reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, you can begin to better understand yourself and your motivations, improving self-awareness. Self-reflection can help you to make more informed decisions, set more realistic goals, and better understand how you relate to others.

It can also help you to identify areas where you may be struggling to manage your emotions or control your actions. By recognizing these patterns, you can work on developing strategies to improve your self-regulation skills. By reflecting on your interactions with others, you can better understand how you communicate and connect with others, improving the overall quality of your relationships. Self-reflecting can help you develop strong and more positive relationships with the people in every area of your life.

Achieving goals is all about mindset.

Having a positive outlook and setting meaningful goals can go a long way in helping us achieve success and happiness. I believe in having a growth mindset. A growth mindset is a belief that one's abilities can be developed and improved through effort and learning. This belief is a key to success because it leads people to take on challenges and learn from them, rather than avoiding them out of fear of failure. When we have a growth mindset, we understand that our abilities are not fixed, and we are more likely to persevere in the face of setbacks because we believe that we can improve. This can lead to better performance and achievement in various areas of life, such as school, work, and personal relationships.

When we have a growth mindset, we understand that our abilities are not fixed, and we are more likely to persevere in the face of setbacks because we believe that we can improve.

Fear can be a powerful force that holds us back from pursuing our goals and achieving success. It can manifest itself in many different ways, such as a fear of failure, a fear of the unknown, or a fear of taking risks. When we are afraid, we may hesitate to take action or try new things, and this can prevent us from making progress and reaching our full potential. However, I like to remember something I recently heard the singer SZA say Your fear of looking stupid is holding you back” and it couldn't be more true! Fear is a natural and normal part of life, and it is something that we can learn to manage and overcome. By acknowledging and facing our fears, we can learn to push through them and move forward toward our goals.

I encourage you to shift your mindset this year and remember to always be kind to yourself. Try and stop negative self-talk this year. We all make mistakes and have setbacks, but it's important to be understanding and compassionate with ourselves and not give in to negative self-talk that will ultimately just hold us back. Instead of dwelling on our failures, we should try to learn from them and move forward with a growth mindset.

We all make mistakes and have setbacks, but it's important to be understanding and compassionate with ourselves and not give in to negative self-talk that will ultimately just hold us back.

At times it's easier for me to move on from things when I know the cause of the feeling/emotion. The truth about where negative self-talk comes from is that it can have a variety of sources. It can include past experiences, negative messages from others, and even our self-doubts. Sometimes we may internalize these experiences and begin to believe that we are not capable or worthy but that simply isn't true.

If you find yourself in the negative self-talk loop just remember that negative self-talk is a habit, and like any habit, it can be changed. By becoming aware of our negative thoughts and actively working on challenging and reframing them, we can break the cycle of negative self-talk and start to build a more positive and resilient mindset. Some things I enjoy doing to combat negative self-talk include daily gratitude and affirmations.

Affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements that can help you focus on your goals and make progress toward achieving them. When you repeat an affirmation to yourself, it can help to shift your mindset and beliefs about what is possible for you. This, in turn, can help to increase your motivation, confidence, and determination to reach your goals. When you repeat affirmations to yourself, you are essentially telling yourself a new story about who you are and what you are capable of. Over time, this can help to change your beliefs about yourself and your abilities, making it easier to take action and achieve your goals. Gratitude

This can be as simple as taking a few moments each day to appreciate the good things in your life. Gratitude has been shown to increase happiness and well-being, so make it a habit to focus on what you are thankful for.

Setting goals

It's so important to set goals for the new year. These can be big or small, personal or professional. The key is to choose goals that are meaningful to you and will bring you closer to your long-term vision for your life. Write down your goals, create a strategy & to-do list, then start taking baby steps! By setting goals, we can clarify our priorities, focus our efforts, and measure our progress. But how do we go about setting effective goals? Sometimes, it's helpful to break your goals down into smaller, more manageable tasks which will help you to stay focused on your progress daily.

Being consistent

Consistency is an important factor in achieving success, and developing a strong routine can be key to staying on track. But why is consistency so important, and how can we make it easier to stick to our routines? Habits are the answer.

First of all, let's look at the science behind habits. According to researchers, it takes an average of 66 days to form a new habit. However, this number can vary depending on the complexity of the behavior and the individual. During this process, our brains are working to create new neural pathways to support the new behavior. This is why it's important to be consistent in the beginning stages of trying to form a new habit. By consistently performing the behavior, we are reinforcing the new neural pathways and making it easier for the behavior to become automatic.

In addition to the brain science behind habits, there are also practical reasons why consistency is important for achieving our goals. Generally, when we are consistent in our efforts, we are more likely to make progress toward our goals. By staying consistent, we are also more likely to build strong foundations and create long-term habits that support our goals.

How habits become routines that help you to achieve your goals.

So how can we stay consistent with our routines?

Start small: If you are trying to form a new habit, start with something manageable that you can do consistently. As you build momentum, you can gradually increase the difficulty or duration of the behavior.
Make it easy: Make it as easy as possible to perform the behavior consistently. This might mean setting reminders, creating a trigger for the behavior (such as always after breakfast), or simplifying the task.
Track your progress: Keep a record of your progress, whether it's a simple checkmark on a calendar or a more detailed log of your efforts. Seeing your progress can be motivating and help you to stay on track.

In conclusion, by setting specific and measurable goals you can clarify your priorities, focus your efforts, and track your progress. Additionally practicing affirmations can help to shift your mindset and beliefs, increasing your confidence and motivation, and by cultivating gratitude, you can cultivate a positive attitude and mindset, which can help to increase your resilience and well-being. Starting the new year off with the right mindset is all about reflection, goal-setting, gratitude, and self-compassion. By focusing on these things, we can set ourselves up for a successful and fulfilling year.
